8 Swim Safety Tips for You & Your Family

1. Never Swim Alone

You should never leave children unattended near or in the pool. Make sure there is always an adult supervisor who can step in if something goes wrong.

2. Secure the Perimeter

Secure your pool with barriers. Ensure that they completely surround your pool with a 4-feet high fence or barrier that includes a self-closing, self-latching gate.

3. Learn CPR

Take a CPR class, it could save someone's life! Pool drownings happen all the time, and CPR can be a life-saving measure before an ambulance arrives.

4. Keep it Clean

Pool or hot tub water needs to be clean and clear at all times. Regularly test and adjust the chemical levels to minimize the risk of earaches, rashes or more serious diseases.

5. Take a Lesson

Ensure everyone in your home knows how to swim by enrolling them in age-appropriate swim courses.

6. Sun Safety Too!

Swimming can really help with the heat, but the sun can also take its toll. Make sure to slather on the sunscreen before taking a swim.

7. Check your Drains

Educate your children about the dangers of drain entanglement and entrapment and teach them to never play or swim near drains or suction outlets.

8. Have a Phone Handy

No matter where you are swimming, the ability to call 911 in an emergency could be a lifesaver.

ALSO: Valley of the Sun YMCA is taking action and offering free water safety classes all week long to non-swimmers, ages six months to adult.
