Choosing a New Home for Your Growing Family

Most people end up staying in their homes for 5 years or more until they need to or choose to make a move. So! If you have kids or have one on the way, you’ll need to look not just at the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but also consider how a house will work for a crawling baby, curious toddler, rambunctious preschooler and beyond, not to mention multiple children, if that’s your plan. This week, we will take a look at what to look for when choosing a home for your growing family.

1. Schools

When you think about a growing family, you think about what school district your children will be a part of. You may also need to research nanny and daycare options for preschool ages as well. Once you have researched school ratings, public and private school options, you will need to find out about transportation, bus stops and what your daily route will be.

The availability and cost of nearby learning programs and schools can vary if you are looking outside of public schools. The daily commute to school should line up with the rest of your schedule since this will be a daily activity.

2. Neighbors

When choosing a new home for your growing family, it's important to know who your neighbors are. If you have younger kids or school aged kids, are there other kids in the neighborhood? Will the kids walk together to the neighborhood schools? It's good to check out neighborhood statistics as well as talking to the neighbors about events and activities or how well everyone gets along. Home daycares and the best way to navigate through the neighborhood are all good questions to ask!

3. Yard Size

If you are still planning on starting or growing your family, yard size might not be as important yet. Once you have little ones (or even pets) that need to release their energy outside in a safe and maintained environment, you might be paying closer attention in your home search. Is a pool important to you? If so, is there a pool gate or enough room to install one? You may also like the front yard for the kids to play outside with friends and neighbors. It all depends on preference!

4. Floor Plan

If your family has expanded and you have a few kids, you might be in search of a split floor plan with a Master Bedroom that is at the other end of the home. Other may want to be close or right next to their kids rooms.

It’s often said the kitchen is the heart of the home, and for good reason! After all, you’ll be spending countless hours there over the years, whether you’re cooking and baking together, grabbing quick bowls of cereal in the morning, or working on school projects with the kids. A kitchen with an eat-in dining area, an island for bar stools, or even a desk area for homework time will give you plenty of room to do all of the above!

4. Storage Space

A growing family is going to require more things, and you’ll need the room to keep this stuff organized. For example, the crib you are going to be using for a while will need a place to be stored once your little bundle of joy grows up, especially if you are planning for more kids!

Single people or even couples don’t go crazy for traditional holiday decorations, but that drastically changes once kids come into the picture. Families normally tend to put up more holiday-related decorations every year, thereby needing more storage space to put these things away afterward. You may also want to search for an additional garage space or backyard shed.
