The first cool October evenings in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Sun Lakes are a welcome change, and homes respond with a few new sounds. Most have ordinary explanations.

Before tracking one down, note when it happens, where it seems to come from, and what else was going on.

Why Homes Pop After Sunset

Desert temperatures swing widely between afternoon and evening. Roof tile, framing, stucco, and attic ductwork expand in the heat and contract as it cools, producing pops and ticks. New cracks in stucco or drywall, or doors that suddenly stick, are worth a professional look.

Plumbing Noises

A bang after the washer shuts off is often water hammer. Hard water leaves sediment in water heaters, which can rumble or pop. A softener may click and hum while regenerating overnight, which is normal.

A/C, Heat Pump, and Pool Sounds

Heat pumps click, hum, and occasionally hiss in defrost mode. Pool pumps cycle on timers. New grinding, squealing, or rattling is worth a call. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas provider or 911 from outside.

Cooing and Scratching Overhead

Pigeons often nest under rooftop solar panels, and their noise carries through the house. Critter guards help. Roof rats are active at night and often reach roofs through citrus trees. A licensed pest control company can identify what's there.

Wind Rattles

Gusty days can rattle loose roof tiles, patio covers, and shades, and make windows whistle.

What to Tell the Professional

Describe the sound, where and when you hear it, and what else is running. "A rumble from the water heater every time it heats" tells a plumber where to start.

If you'd like a recommendation for a local plumber, HVAC technician, or pest professional, just ask. We're happy to share names we know.
